Two IT businesses that became one.
Nick and Matt met through a mutual customer in 2015. Both were already running their own IT companies. Nick had built Freeman PC Services straight out of college and spent two years writing software for the security and policing world. Matt had twenty years in IT departments across Europe and a decade on his own in Sussex. They formed Octotech that October.
The idea was to fill the gap most businesses fall into: a one-person IT supplier who is brilliant until they go on holiday, or a national provider where you are a contract number in a queue. We wanted real depth in security, Microsoft 365 and networks, at a scale where the engineer who picks up the phone has been to your office and knows which server is the awkward one.
We are still independent and intend to stay that way. Nobody sets us a target for how much hardware to sell, which is why our advice is sometimes “don’t buy that yet”.
Four things we are stubborn about.
Fix the cause
Closing a ticket isn’t the job if the same fault comes back next month. Repeat issues are investigated as problems, not reopened forever.
Say it plainly
If we can’t explain why something matters in a sentence, you probably don’t need it.
Write it down
Every device, licence, circuit and admin login documented and visible to you. If you ever leave, the documentation leaves with you.
Measure ourselves
Response times, resolution times and SLA performance go in your quarterly review whether the numbers flatter us or not.
